Working at the Academy
The Academy offers diverse and interesting work opportunities in research, science management and technical services with roles involving a high degree of individual responsibility and scope for self-organisation and personal development. Most of the roles are based in the centre of Munich and the Garching research campus.
An inspiring work environment
With its wide spectrum of research and network of outstanding scientists at all career levels in the community of scholars, the Academy offers its research and administrative staff a unique and inspiring work environment.
Human resources development and opportunities
Every year, the Academy releases an updated and wide-ranging programme of further training and upskilling opportunities, which are available to all staff. The programme covers everything from soft skills to specialised further qualification for administrative staff and researchers. The Academy readily considers individual advanced training requests. Academic staff can also contact the further training officer for more information: weiterbildung[at]badw.de
Salaries and social welfare
Remuneration is based on the public sector collective agreement for the federal states (TV-L). Your salary group classification would depend on your professional experience. You can find an overview of typical salaries here. In addition, we offer an attractive occupational pension scheme through the federal and state government pension institution (VBL). There are also other options for individual pension provision, such as deferred compensation.
Subject to certain conditions, the state of Bavaria provides its employees with various social welfare benefits and fringe benefits such as a metropolitan area allowance, a travel allowance, and housing for civil servants (you can find more information here). Staff with an employment contract on 1 December receive an annual bonus with their November salary. In addition, our staff benefit from perks like discounted public transport (MVV, DB Job-Ticket) and other special employee discounts.
Work-life balance and family-friendly policies
The Academy offers flexible working hours models to help its staff maintain a good work-life balance at every stage of life. The Academy’s family support office can also facilitate bringing children to work on certain days if childcare is unavailable at short notice. Since 2024, The Academy has also been a member of Familienpakt Bayern, a family support service for employees.
Remote working
Working from home and remote working options give you the flexibility to organise the way you work. The Academy offers a number of different models to facilitate its staff.
Sabbatical years
After a certain time in many employees’ careers, they yearn for time out, but don’t want to interrupt the social security of their employment relationship or resort to taking unpaid leave. Taking a sabbatical for one year provides an attractive alternative. There are also sabbatical models that allow employees to manage their transition to retirement in a flexible manner. The Academy can help you find a solution that meets your individual requirements.
Health management
The Academy helps its staff members manage their health by subsidising in-house back exercise and yoga classes and holding information events on healthy living topics.
Diversity and equality
The Academy has signed up to the Diversity Charter to create a prejudice- and discrimination-free work environment. All staff members, regardless of gender, nationality, religion or views, disability, age, sexual orientation or identity, deserve to be valued and should be able to realise their full potential.
An international working environment
As an active member of international networks, the Academy works closely with universities and research institutes around the world. Our researchers originate from over 30 different countries.
Located in the heart of Munich
The Academy is based in the centre of Munich, which means that it benefits from excellent public transport links. The institutes on the Garching research campus are also very well connected.
The Academy provides a truly unique working environment in the historical surrounds of the Residenz former royal palace. The manicured gardens of the Hofgarten are also close by. There is a wide choice of lunch options with canteens as well as local restaurants and supermarkets. The Englischer Garten, the Hofgarten and the Residenz courtyards are wonderful places to take time out, and Munich’s Old Town is just a short walk away.
