Archive

The archive is the Academy’s memory bank. It assumes responsibility for, catalogues and preserves the Academy’s administrative documents, the minutes of meetings and the estates of prominent members. The archive documents the Academy’s history stretching back over 250 years since its foundation by the Elector Max III. Joseph in 1759.

The archive’s collections are stored in a database and some of them can be searched via an online catalogue. Notable collections include:

  • The minutes of the meetings of the Academy and its classes (since 1779 but incomplete).
The minutes of meetings held between 1779 and 1806 were catalogued according to modern standards with the support of the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Stiftung.
  • Correspondence from the foundation years of the Academy.
  • Documents from the "Attributes" and successor institutions affiliated to the Academy after 1807.
  • Files relating to members and elections as well as literary remains (e.g. From Friedrich Baethgen, Karl von Goebel, Karl Theodor von Heigel, Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius, Heinrich Mitteis, Hans Raupach and Richard Wilhelm).
  • The Regensburger Grabsteinbuch [book of gravestones] (PDF). Please contact the archive team for a higher resolution.

Parts of the archive dating back to 1850 were lost during World War II.

The Academy’s archive also contains the Archive of the Historical Commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (overview of collections).

Access to all archive materials is subject to the provisions of the Bavarian Archives Act and the Rules and conditions for access to the Bavarian State Archives as amended.
