Prizes and awards

The BAdW rewards excellent academic achievement in all disciplines and honours special contributions to the Academy. It supports young researchers by awarding prizes for outstanding achievements in the natural and life sciences, the humanities and the social sciences, as well as interdisciplinary cooperation. The Schelling Prize rewards the work of exceptional researchers from all fields. The Academy also awards the High-Tech Prize of the Bavarian Minister-President, in conjunction with the Bavarian state government. The prize is regarded as one of the most prestigious accolades to be awarded to scientists in Germany and it honours outstanding achievements in the field of technology.

nomination procedures

Different procedures are used to nominate candidates for the Academy’s various science prizes. Academy members are either involved and/or entitled to submit a nomination in all of the procedures. For the Schelling Prize, universities and research institutes in Bavaria are eligible to nominate candidates. Following a multi-stage appraisal, the decision on awarding most prizes is made by the plenum. A dedicated selection committee decides on the recipient of the High-Tech Prize of the Bavarian Minister-President.

The monetary awards are provided by well-known foundations, the BAdW's Society of Friends, as well as private donors and supporters of the sciences and humanities.
