By conducting and enabling cutting-edge IT research, the Academy is a key player in making Bavaria a leading hub for the tech industry. The main activities in this field include the provision and optimisation of IT services for scientific study, exascale, AI and quantum computing, and research on the digital transformation and its consequences for society.
LRZ
The Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) ranks as one of the top academic/scientific computing centres in the world. It is also the IT partner for Munich’s universities and other third-level institutions and scientific facilities in Bavaria, Germany and Europe. It supports top-level interdisciplinary research by providing high-availability, secure and energy-efficient IT solutions based on cutting-edge technology.

Its aim is to give society the tools and insights it needs to shape a digital future underpinned by a sense of responsibility and advocacy for the common good.
Scientific Software
Scientific software has been a vital research tool for decades, used in everything from simulations to artificial intelligence. To date, however, no-one has come up with a strategy to collect and preserve these important milestones of digital science. The project “Edition Scientific Software (EWS): Research on History of Science and Philosophy of Science Aspects and Edition of Software History of Digital Sciences from 1950 to 2010” fills this gap. The project explores, documents and edits historical software projects from a wide range of disciplines and makes this information available on an online platform.
