SUMMARY:Perspectives on the replicability of research across scientific dis
 ciplines
DESCRIPTION:The last two years have demonstrated the important role played
by reliable scientific evidence in guiding how both policy makers and the p
ublic respond to crises. At the same time, a lack of trust in scientists an
d other experts has emerged as an important constraint on our ability to ad
dress the ever changing realities of the COVID pandemic. This fireside chat
will explore the replicability of reliability of scientific findings and t
ake a critical look at the measures taken by different disciplines to assur
e that scientific evidence is dependable and worthy of the public‘s trust.
This fireside chat is organized by Peter Schwardmann, Hauke Marquardt and t
he working group on “Replicability and reliability of scientific research“
from the Young Academy in the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
The working group investigates the practices and mechanisms that underlie r
eliable scientific evidence. Peter Schwardmann is an assistant professor of
behavioral economics at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He previ
ously worked at LMU Munich. Hauke Marquardt is associate professor of solid
Earth sciences at the University of Oxford. Peter Schwardman is a member o
f the Young Academy since 2017 and Hauke Marquardt was a member of the Youn
 g Academy until 2021.
