SUMMARY:I or we? The development of values: from childhood to adolescence
DESCRIPTION:Values can be understood as orienting frames of reference for h
uman action. They have both an individual and a collective dimension. Indiv
iduals as well as societies are often confronted with situations in which a
dherence to different values leads to conflicting consequences. Differently
weighting these values is one option for dealing with such conflicts. Valu
es, their relationship among each other, as well as their respective weight
ing undergo continuous change as do societies at large. In times in which w
e face challenges like climate change, global migration or the Covid-19 pan
demic the relative weight of community-oriented values (“we”) versus self-o
riented values (“I”) is of particular importance. Ariel Knafo-Noam is a pro
fessor of developmental psychology at Hebrew University, Jerusalem. His res
earch is concerned with factors influencing differences in individuals’ soc
iability and their values system as a whole. He specifically looks at the d
evelopment of altruism, empathy, and further aspects of prosocial behavior.
He studies how different contexts, cultures, and family constellations sha
pe value development; and he also looks at genetic influences of value deve
lopment. In his talk, Ariel Knafo-Noam will discuss how his research findin
gs on value development from infancy to adulthood may help to shape and rei
nforce value-oriented behavior in times of deep crisis.
