SUMMARY:Anthropocene (Post)Humanities
DESCRIPTION:This workshop explores the place, transformation, and reconcept
ualization of the (post)human in Anglophone literature and film about clima
te change in the age of the Great Acceleration (post 1950). Literary writer
s and theorists have responded to the Anthropocene by foregrounding the lim
itations of traditional understandings of the human in a number of differen
t ways. Some recent debates have explored the challenges of conceptualising
species-level and trans-personal causality without losing sight of the une
qual global distribution of risk and precarity that results from climate ch
ange. Other conversations have drawn attention to the fact that the ontolog
ical domains of nature, culture, and technology that were once thought to b
e distinct have in fact always been inextricably intertwined. Accordingly,
different concepts of the posthuman are currently discussed across the huma
nities to theorise this decentring and enmeshment of the human in non-human
, technological, and economic networks. Finally, many ecowriters and critic
s are calling for a move away from anthropocentric and towards biocentric p
erspectives. Entering into dialogue with these ongoing debates, this worksh
op will focus on the continued importance and resilience of concepts of the
human in cultural conversations about the Anthropocene.
